Etching "Calcio in Piazza S.Croce"

Etching by the Florentine artist Giuseppe Zocchi (1716–1767) depicting the historic game of Calcio in Piazza Santa Croce in Florence. Beneath the image appears the title: View of the Church and Piazza of Santa Croce with the game of Calcio held in the year 1738 in the Royal presence of the reigning Sovereigns. The print is taken from the volume Scelta di XXIV vedute delle principali contrade, piazze, chiese e palazzi della città di Firenze, published in Florence in the summer of 1744 and dedicated to Grand Duchess Maria Theresa of Austria.

The views composing the volume combine the Florentine seventeenth-century tradition with the study of contemporary Venetian models and the use of the camera obscura, resulting in a precise and analytical depiction of urban spaces.
